The National Assembly has passed the resolution which has not only reject the Supreme Court decision on holding the elections in Punjab province but also urged the Prime Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif not to obey the orders of Supreme Court.
It is the first time in the history of Pakistan that the legislators are going against the constitution, which would create a new but extremely specious precedent in the parliamentary history.
Although the legislation is the right of the parliament but PM is exploiting it in the political interest of PDM that would not the prudent choice for the government, because it would result a tug of war between the two important pillars of the state i.e. parliament and judiciary.
The current political and economic situation is not in the favor of the government. So they are reluctant for holding early elections in the country as they know that the people would not vote them at this juncture of time.
It feels that PDM first wanted to gain some time as they could offer a minor relief to inflation hit nation in the next budget to go for the polls but now it feels that PDM wants to get rid of the power, which they involuntary embraced that could not be eschewed by them. Prime Minister Sharif and his cabinet members are finding the way of face saving to quit the affairs.
Now the government has got this opportunity that the PM will not comply with the orders of the Supreme Court regarding elections in Punjab, then SC would take action for contempt of court. If the tension would be raised and state of affairs would go to the direction of fighting against each other, then ultimately the court can show the doors to Prime Minister.
The government is thinking that it is the easy way to turn the table around as after sending PM to home by the apex court, the PDM can sell another posture in the coming elections to attract the voters once again.
After the decision of Supreme Court that the elections would be held in Punjab on 14th May, the PDM led government went on the back foot.
Now by rejecting the court orders the National Assembly would add more to political mess that is going on in the country. The parliament is the highest esteemed institution of the country and if the law makers would themselves go against the constitution and indulge in the anti-constitutional proceedings than law would not be stand at supreme height in the country.
The National Assembly after advising the Prime Minister for not obeying the court orders would lose its remaining credibility among the people, who are already showing no confidence in the political leadership especially in the incumbent ruling elite that had played havoc with the common man’s kitchen economy by bringing flood of price-hike on the directives of IMF.
The Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other leadership of PDM should ponder seriously that the conflicts between the national institutions would not only harm their reputation but dent the national interests as well, likewise it did in the past so many times . The rulers should learn a lesson from the history..
