AWSS installed on Skuli, Ardukas, Concordia glaciers

Skardu: Under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Auto-Met Weather Stations (AWSS) have been installed in Skuli, Ardukas, and Concordia glaciers. The purpose of this initiative is to promote scientific research on glaciers and hydrometeorology in the mountainous regions, focusing on the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Himalayan mountain ranges, to conserve and secure these regions.

The project has received special cooperation from EV-K2-CNR, KIU, University of Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency (EPA-GB), and the Italian agency AICS.

Previously, under the Glaciers and Students Project, AWSS were installed in Pasu Gojal and Shishper glaciers in 2022, which proved to be instrumental in data collection for meteorological research and tackling challenges related to climate change.

The Glaciers and Students Project offers research opportunities for students and professors at the University of Baltistan, enabling them to participate in modern glacier research. Milan University and the University of King Pirri in Italy are also part of this collaboration, contributing to sustainable initiatives and environmental conservation efforts in Gilgit-Baltistan, addressing environmental changes.
