New York (KMS): The United Nations Security Council has been encouraged to follow its resolutions regarding the Kashmir conflict, uphold its commitment to regional peace, and “show that multilateralism can succeed,” according to Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Speaking on “International Peace and Security” and “Reformed Multilateralism” in the Security Council, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari noted that the Kashmir problem was one agenda item that had not been addressed.
“We believe it to be a multilateral agenda, an agenda of this UNSC, and if you want to see the success of the multilateral institution or multilateralism and the success of this very Council, surely you can aid in this process; allow the implementation of the resolutions of the UNSC, when it comes to the question of Kashmir, prove the multilateralism can succeed, prove the UNSC can succeed, and deliver peace in the region,” he continued.
He stated that Pakistan thought furthering the UN’s democratic process would strengthen the organisation and provide it moral legitimacy to take action through the UNSC, General Assembly, and other UN bodies. The institution would benefit from increased democratisation and allowing everyone’s sovereign quality, rather than their superiority.
“It does not suit the interests of the UN to enlarge the totalitarian power of the veto and to recruit more members to its elitist club,” he stated.
The Security Council, according to the foreign minister, is primarily in charge of preserving world peace and security
