Gilani’s selfless efforts and services in accordance with Islamic principles and values

Professor Dr. Syed Mohsin Ali Gilani

All acclaim is due to Allah, the Almighty alone, who is deserving of all glory. Everyone and everything are dependent on Allah Ta’ala, who is independent of all things. The beginning of human civilization was made possible by Adam and Eve (peace be upon them), whom Allah, the Almighty, created. Through the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, Allah Almighty perfected the message of his oneness. Adam’s descendants are given instructions to follow the last and final prophet’s teachings in their purest form in order to prosper. Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, lived in accordance with the will of God and paved the road for humanity to prosper in this life and the next. Through Islam, people’s quality of life and positions improved. Before departing this world, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) instructed those in attendance and those who would come after him to follow and seek wisdom from the Quran and the Ahl e Bayt. (Reference: Sahih Muslim, Book 44, Hadith 55, 2408a)

In order to propagate the true message of Islam and improve the lives of those living in these deprived regions, descendants of this noble family who had previously lived in various countries migrated to Punjab and subsequently to Jammu and Kashmir, regions that were formerly ruled by the Hindu and Dogra empires. Arriving at Bhimber was Syed Ameer Shah Gilani Rahmatullah. As people were dying of the plague and there was no effective medical care system, his son, Syed Nawab Shah Gilani Rahmatullah, a Hakim, journeyed on foot from Rajauri Bajnoa Kalsian, Bhimbar,to Gujrat and the adjacent villages of Kotli, Tattapani, Goi, Hajira, and other regions in what is now Azad Kashmir.

The son of Syed Nawab Shah Gilani Rahmatullah Alaihi, Syed Wilayat Shah Gillani Rahmatullah Alaihi, carried out this task for the next 90 years. A number of societal evils were cured by Syed Wilayat Shah Gilani (RA). Since there was no hospital or healthcare system at the time, Syed Wilayat Shah Gilani served as the healer. He gave the people of this region, later known as Azad Kashmir, education, moral consciousness, political awareness, and social awareness. He strengthened the defense system in border regions by assisting the military forces. His last burial site is at Mandhole. Every year, on November 3rd, following the recitation of the Holy Quran, a ceremony is undertaken to honor his commitment to paving the road for future generations.

The successor and the son of Hakim Syed Wilayat Shah Gilani (RA), Qibla Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani (RA), preserved all the records and information regarding the selfless services of this noble family to this area and presented them to his son, Prof. Dr. Syed Mohsin Ali Gilani. All of the details can be found in Prof. Dr. Syed Mohsin Ali Gilani’s recently published book “Islamic Teachings,” which is now available for free distribution to truth-seekers in the libraries and bookstores of Lahore, Islamabad, Jehlum, Bhimber, Mirpur, Kotli, Poonch, Hajira, and other areas.

Hakim Syed Mushtaq Gilani Rahmatullah alaih continued this exemplary family’s responsibility in the subsequent four to five decades by serving selflessly to the people of Azad Kashmir and Pakistan. Qibla Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani completed his Masters of Arts (MA) during a time when education was not as prevalent. Thousands of Sindhi flood victims received his assistance when Qibla Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani was employed as an officer in a government authority in Rawalpindi’s Wah Cantonment. Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani would have retired on the 22nd scale, which is the highest scale in the country for government employers, if he had kept working.

Qibla Syed Wilayat Shah Gilani noticed that his son, Qibla Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani, had outstanding morals and integrity, as well as being exceptionally capable and accomplished. He appointed Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani to advance the genuine teachings of Islam and serve mankind via the example of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Additionally, Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani obtained a diploma in prophetic medicine and contemporary medicine. Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani helped mankind for the next four to five decades until the age of 66, when he passed away. Even after his passing in 2011, many politicians, educators, religious scholars, and individuals from all walks of life—especially those who are less fortunate—continued to remember him and express their gratitude to Qibla Hakeem Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani. It is hard to include all of Qibla Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani’s services for society; however, the following provides a brief overview.

  1. In Rakkar and Mandhole, he established madrassa schools. He put forward the idea of several religious schools, mosques, and educational institutions in remote areas.
  2. He practiced medicine and served as a medical professional for a living. He used his own hard-earned, legitimate money to build a mosque, library, and institution in Mandhole, all with the sole purpose of promoting the authentic teachings of Islam in the modern world.
  3. He played his role in setting up several roads, water supply projects, and medical facilities in distant regions where no elected official had ever been as there were no roads. He walked for hours every week to reach those distant areas and help people. He additionally instructed people on how to work together for the common good and resolved disputes of every sort. It saved people time and money since they didn’t need to go to court to settle their disputes. In these underdeveloped regions, hundreds of other initiatives that helped mankind were established under his supervision and guidance.
  4. He educated people about their obligations to their faith, family, and communities in accordance with Islamic teachings. People were made aware of the rights of women, the elderly, children, minorities, and the impoverished. The barren mountains in the Gajjan and Gala Kanatt regions, which are now extensively wooded, are an example of how he initiated plantations to enhance the ecology in isolated locations. He executed each initiative voluntarily and entirely to carry out the teachings of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  5. He treated a variety of illnesses using both modern and prophetic medicine when patients from Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, and other nations approached him.
  6. He raised political and general awareness. He educated the public about their basic rights and responsibilities. In the 1970s, following a meeting with the Prime Minister of Pakistan at Muzaffarabad, a new political party was established in Azad Kashmir to promote the needs of the people. Its primary goal was to concentrate new political power in the region without allowing one ruling class or party to oppress the underclass based on caste systems or social status. When Qibla Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani was alive, party leaders from various political parties would visit and consult with him to seek guidance and instructions to better serve the people.
  7. He pioneered, participated in, and supported a number of scholarly conferences, workshops, and seminars from both domestic and international organizations, including USAID and the RISE Program for Education for both males and females. He would receive a lot of intellectuals visiting him from Azad Kashmir to Karachi.
  8. To better serve humanity in accordance with Islamic teachings, Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Rehmatullah Alaihi spoke at conventions to professionals from a range of fields about professionalism and their duties, including judges, lawyers, professors from colleges and universities, educators from schools, the police department, the transportation department, and other professions.
  9. A national bill for military families was enacted in the 1970s thanks to the tireless work of Qibla Hakeem Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani. Before, a person’s family was not eligible for a pension if they died while on active duty. However, as a result of this work, hundreds of widows and orphans were granted the right to a family pension, converting their service pension into a family pension automatically.
  10. Qibla Hakeem Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani had no affiliation with any political or religious organization; instead, he made countless contributions to society through his charitable work and halal income. Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani had a hardworking yet simple life. He was a social worker and spiritual leader who worked tirelessly.
  11. He placed a lot of importance on determination, purity of intentions, self-confidence, halal income, and ethical behavior. He instilled in his children the value of hard labor and the importance of using one’s own legal income to help others as much as one can, rather than asking for money in the form of fund donations or offerings for religious services. Until his death on the last day, he spent more than 40 years assisting his relatives and their offspring with their schooling, jobs, and personal decisions. Many of them were widows and orphans, yet he loved and cared for them just like his own children.
  12. He assisted individuals in rural regions find work and gave them wise financial and business advice, which improved their quality of life. Even twelve years after his passing, many families still recall and speak of the support and assistance they received. He provided free meals and housing in an area of his home that was expressly intended for students and workers from other regions who couldn’t afford to go and stay somewhere else.
  13. Qibla Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani lived his life according to Islamic teachings, and he expressed his faith verbally and in writing in his last moments, right before his soul departed, and he handed over the written declaration of his faith to his son, Prof. Dr. Syed Mohsin Ali Gilani infront of hundreds of people present there.

Millions of individuals who have benefited from Qibla Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani both at home and abroad can learn from his life that doing things for the pleasure of our maker, Allah, ensures one’s success in both this world and the Hereafter.

May Allah be merciful to him. On July 12, 2011, about 12:05 a.m., Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani passed away at the CMH hospital in Rawalakot. He was buried in Mandhole. He lived all of his life in Hajira and traveled all of Azad Kashmir to preach Islam and help people in accordance with Islamic principles.

An annual ceremony is conducted in Mandhole on July 12th in the evening to pray for all of Allah’s prophets and messengers (may peace and blessings be upon them) after Quranic recitation. On July 13, food is served following speeches, lectures, and Quranic recitations to motivate participants to walk in the ways of Allah and his beloved Messenger, Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, and have a positive impact on society.

Hakim Syed Mushtaq Hussain Gilani’s beautiful life and spirit inspire the people of Azad Kashmir and Pakistan to adhere to the Prophet Muhammad’s (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) teachings in their simple and genuine form without any distortion in them so that every person, regardless of gender, age, or ethnic origin, contributes to society. We pray to Allah to guide us as we proceed along the path of Islam.Amen.
