Queen Elizabeth II was born Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21, 1926 in London to Prince Albert, Duke of York (later known as King George VI) and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain held the title of queen for the longest period of time in British history. She and her husband Prince Philip were distant cousins and Queen Elizabeth also loved watching wrestling on television.
Grief is the price we pay for love
She was a unique and talented person. She never lost her ability to laugh and grin or to uplift others with her warmth and generosity in good times or bad. She was someone I loved and respected for her enthusiasm, dedication to helping others and most notably her love and care for her two sons.
Most people were unaware that Elizabeth would one day rule as the queen of Great Britain when she was born. In British history, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain ruled for the longest period of time. In June 2022, she had her Platinum Jubilee to commemorate her 70 years in power.
From February 6, 1952 until her coronation on June 2, 1953 Queen Elizabeth II ruled as monarch. In addition to being the grandmother of Princes William and Harry, she was the mother of Prince Charles, the successor to the throne. She attempted, as the longest-reigning queen in British history, to keep royal traditions alive while modernizing her reign and being attentive to a changing populace.
Elizabeth’s parents split their time between a residence in London and the family’s residence at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Tutors taught Elizabeth and Margaret, her younger sister, at home. French, arithmetic, and history were among the academic subjects covered, in addition to classes in singing, dance, and painting.
Elizabeth and her sister, who had been moved to Windsor Castle, mostly avoided London once World War II broke out in 1939. With her speech consoling the British children who had been evacuated from their homes and family, she went on to make the first of her well-known radio broadcasts in 1940. The 14-year-old princess assured them that everything would be okay in the end because God would take care of them and grant them triumph and serenity.
Elizabeth soon started taking on other public duties. Appointed colonel-in-chief of the Grenadier Guards by her father, Elizabeth made her first public appearance inspecting the troops in 1942. She also began to accompany her parents on official visits within Britain.
To support the war effort, Elizabeth enlisted in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945. She received skilled driving and technical training side by side with other British women. Even though her volunteer work was short-lived (just a few months), it gave Elizabeth a window into a distinct, non-royal world. When she and Margaret were permitted to mix invisibly among the populace on Victory in Europe Day, she had yet another memorable encounter outside of the monarchy.
On September 8, 2022, Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96.
