UNESCO assures all out support to collect data on culture
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA) Director General Kamran Ahmad Afridi on mTuesday said that cultural mapping was a prerequisite for the promotion of culture and that the Unesco had assured all out msupport to collect data and information for this purpose. “Cultural mapping is a must for the promotion of culture. The KPCTA and Unesco will jointly work for collecting data and information and boosting the culture in the province,” Unesco Director in Pakistan Patricia McPhilips said in a meeting with DG KPCTA at the Tourism Complex here. Director Culture Shama Niamat, Assistant Director Culture Riaz Khan and other officials were also present at the meeting. Patricia McPhilips said that taking steps for the promotion of culture as per the Culture Policy without cultural mapping would be a distant dream. She said that her organisation would extend all out support to KPCTA to collect the exact data and information on KP culture and take tangible steps for its promotion.
The official suggested that private sector should be involved in cultural events and activities to boost the culture in every nook and corner of the province. She termed the establishment of KPCTA a right step in the right direction for promotion of culture and tourism as both the sectors were interconnected. Earlier, Kamran Afridi and Patricia McPhilips discussed ways and means in detail for the promotion of culture in the province.They said that cultural mapping would help in collecting data and information on cultural activities, cultural fairs, artistes, hujras, local sports and events in far-off villages, towns and cities of the province.
