The discussion between Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Haji Ghulam Ali and ECP high-ups to finalize the date of elections in KP remained fruitless as no decision could be taken in this regard.
On Tuesday, the Governor called the ECP delegation to the provincial capital for consultation on the election dates in KP. The delegation of Election Commission of Pakistan comprised of Omar Hamid Khan Secretary ECP, Special Secretary Zafar Iqbal Hussain and DG(Law) Muhammad Arshad visited Governor House Peshawar on the invitation of Governor Ghulam Ali.
During the meeting the ECP Secretary briefed the Governor about the preparedness of the elections on behalf of the Chief Election Commissioner. The meeting lasted for hours but no fruitful results could come out of the meeting.
The Governor KP Ghulam Ali sought more time by saying that he will to consult the matter with Inspector General of Police and Chief Secretary of the province on the state of law and order in KP
It is pertinent to mention here that after the failure from the Election Commission of Pakistan to announce the date of election, President Arif Alvi had to intervene in the matter and announced the date of elections in the provinces of Punjab and KP by using his constitutional right.
The federal government moved the Supreme Court against the presidential orders but the apex court had given its verdict that the President of the country has the legal right to announce the election date.
According to the constitution of the country, the election must be held within 90 days after dissolution of any assembly.
