Rehan Ahmed, a 15-year-old leg-spinner, was named to the England squad on Wednesday for a three-match tour to Pakistan that will begin next week, and he has a chance to become the country’s youngest male Test player.
If chosen, Brian Close of Yorkshire, who last played for England at the age of 18 years and 149 days against New Zealand in July 1949, will lose against Leicestershire’s England under-19 international, who is 18 years and 102 days old.
The team’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, stated in a release, “We realise he’s not the finished thing and has raw potential, but we appreciate how he approaches his game.”
He will greatly benefit from the experience of being a member of the team in Pakistan, and he will round out our roster.
Currently based in Abu Dhabi, England will depart for Pakistan on Saturday. The first Test will take place in Rawalpindi on December 1.
