Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra inaugurates KTH Public Health Laboratory

PESHAWAR: MTI Khyber Teaching Hospital Public Health Biosafety level 2 Laboratory is inaugurated by Honourable Health Minister Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra on 30th May 2020. He said that it is great honour that KTH which is the 2nd big hospital of KP now has a lab which is 3rd Public Health Laboratory in the province. The minister was received by the team KTH. He was also accompanied by Health Secretary Syed Imitaz Hussain Shah. After the inauguration, he visited different areas of the hospital. Minister Health was briefed by Team KTH in the committee room of KTH administration block. Health Minister was very positive about solving all the problems faced by MTI KTH and he directed Health Secretary to take up the matter of early release of Rs 19.50 million pending amount of the renovation project. He promised that the IBP incentive will be given to all the practitioners in MTIs’ and it is a general problem which will be solved soon across the province. Honourable Health Minister Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra recognized the services of team KTH and paid rich tribute for their services in the pandemic as front line fighters. The minister assured to enhance the capacity of PCR lab and directed Health Secretary for doing everything possible in this regard. Two PCR machines were donated by WHO Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chapter with the help of Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The state of the art Biosafety level 2 Laboratory was made by MTI KTH own expense. On 25th May 2020 final validation was done by NIH And external quality control check by provincial and KMU Team was approved. Pockit Central Real time single step fully automatic PCR machine is of latest model and version which have the capacity to running 6 tests in 2 hours. The machines will be running 12 tests per 2 hour session. Other than COVID-19 testing the PCR will also be helpful in Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) & Ribonucleic acid (RNA) tests for different viruses. Keeping in view the machine test limitation, 50 to 80 samples will be run in initial phase. To combat with the COVID-19 the BoG MTI KTH has already approved and directed the management to facilitate and special care of the patients and the staff working in triage, isolation unit and isolation private rooms. A 55 bedded fully equipped high dependency isolation unit is already functioned with 30 private rooms have already been declared Isolation for the KTH staff. All the basic needs which include breakfast, lunch, evening tea, dinner and other necessities is provided to the staff working & patients admitted in isolation private rooms, and isolation unit from the hospital resources. MTI KTH has received its first COVID-19 suspected patient on 22nd February 2020 since date KTH has screened and sampled a total of 900 patients out of which 342 were positive and the 510 remaining were negative, 48 results are waited. 310 patients were admitted in the hospital and 202 successfully treated and recovered. 47 patients have expired. The remaining 590 patients were treated as outdoor patients whereas 61 are still admitted. 44 employees of the hospital successfully defeated corona virus which includes 6 managerial staff, 13 doctors, 13 nurses, 6 JCT and other employees. Today, WHO Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chapter In-charge Dr Saeed Akbar has donated Sample storage solution, specimen collecting & transport swab, PCR testing kits for KTH Public Health Lab Biosafety level 2 which worth is Rs 2.39 million.
