Pakistan once again urged Afghanistan to take action against the Tehrik Talban Pakistan (TTP) , which is the key player to deteriorate the relations between both the neighboring states.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jelani has accused the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a banned organization of causing bitterness between Islamabad and Kabul, stating that the interim Pakistani government needs to take “concrete actions” against the group.

During a conversation with foreign media on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York,  Jelani emphasized the need for Afghanistan’s leaders to fulfill promises made to Pakistan and other international partners, stressing that it’s unfortunate that attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan continue.

The high brass of the Pakistani army also called on Afghanistan to take action against the TTP. They also said that Afghanistan should show its determination not to allow its territory to be used against other countries.

It has been noticed that from the past few months continuous terrorist attacks are being carried out on the security forces of Pakistan in the border areas especially in Balochistan in which several security personnel were martyred.

Attacks emanating from the banned outfit , TTP from inside Afghanistan into Pakistan is a major concern for Pakistan

The issue of reuniting the terrorists has a great significance for Pakistan because her Foreign Office ponders that a stable Afghanistan is necessary for regional peace and without it the progress in the region cannot take place.

There are various extremist groups present in Afghanistan including ISIS-K , TTP  and several other organizations with their roots in Afghanistan, as a significant concern, not only for Pakistan but also for other regional countries.

Pakistan is going to ink multiple MoUs and agreements with the member countries of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation during this month’s visit to Islamabad by diplomats from D-8 nations. These agreements are aimed at enhancing cooperation in agriculture, mining, information technology, defense production, and energy sectors.

Economic stability is essential for Pakistan as it faces a balance of payments crisis, and it requires billions of dollars in foreign exchange reserves to fulfill its trade obligations and repay its international loans in the current fiscal year. For economic growth, peace and stability in the region is a must for all regional countries.

Islamabad wants a dialogue-based resolution. For almost two years, the ongoing dispute has created instability in almost every country.

Now it is high time that Pakistan and Afghanistan should cooperate with each other in curbing the terrorism as without fixing this menace, the dream of progress could not be achieved.

There are some foreign hands including some anti –Pakistan elements, which are using the Afghan soil for their nefarious designs against Pakistan.

Curtailing extremism and terrorism would be in favour of every country of the region. Afghanistan, which has become the epicenter of terrorist should use the multi prong  policy but first of all it should start negotiation with Taliban and other  terrorist groups to engage them in the dialogue process.

Former Prime Minister and Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan is playing his political cards wisely. First, he played a great game in Punjab Assembly and now he has turned his direction towards the National Assembly. In an important move on Monday, Imran Khan gave a hint of party’s return in National Assembly. Imran Khan is of the view that the party will come back to national assembly to work on three main sides including the Prime Minister’s confidence vote, bringing care taker setup at center, and to create an environment for holding general elections either in March or April.
PTI faced a number of difficulties in its tenure at center and in Punjab due to its alliance with other parties. The party is still ruling Punjab in alliance with PML-Q. After emerging as the biggest political party of Pakistan in the general elections of 2018, PTI faced blackmailing tactics from the hands of the parties in its alliance. PML-Q, having 10 seats in Punjab and 05 at center, has been playing tactics of pressurizing the PTI’s government. Imran Khan played a great card to tackle this issue by offering PML-Q to merge itself in PTI. The former prime minister shared the proposal in a meeting with journalists at his Zaman Town residence in Lahore on Friday, where he looked quite relaxed and confident after Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s successful vote of confidence.
After holding detailed discussion with senior leadership of the party Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi took the final decision of merging his party with PTI. The decision was supposed to be announced in the evening on Monday. But, the whole move devastated as the divisions within PML-Q emerged once again. The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Monday suspended the basic party membership of Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi for talking about the possibility of his party’s possible merger with the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Despite the emergence of the division from within PML-Q Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi is still committed to merge himself and his party’s MPA’s in PTI. But, the matter has been delayed for some time.
Imran Khan is playing bravely on all the sides of his political wicket currently. His move to merge PML-Q with PTI will strengthen the party across the country generally and in Punjab particularly. The successful merger of PML-Q in PTI will eradicate the roots of PML-N from Punjab. The prolonged discussion regarding fate of Punjab in the hands of PML-N will come to its end. Besides this, PTI will also come out of the pressure and blackmailing tactics which it has been facing throughout his recent tenure. Other than Punjab, Imran Khan has also taken a great move by deciding to go back to National Assembly. PTI’s return to National Assembly will help the party to give tough time to the sitting government by asking the PM to get vote of confidence. Besides this, the move will also be helpful for Imran Khan to materialize his prolonged commitment for early elections.

Political alliances between different political parties is a common phenomenon in Pakistan, but the current political chaos in the country backed by the worst economic conditions has created a new and different political environment where the mergers of political parties are taken place. All the three factions of Muthida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have reunited on one page. Similarly, Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also offered the Pakistan Muslim League Q for the merger of both the parties. The former prime minister shared the proposal in a meeting with journalists at his Zaman Town residence in Lahore on Friday, where he looked quite relaxed and confident after Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s successful vote of confidence.
In a fresh development, Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi has hinted at the possibility of a merger between the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and its ally the Pakistan Tekreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Elahi while answering a journalist’s question during a media talk at the inauguration ceremony of the Khatam Ul Nabiyeen University in Lahore Sunday implied that the possibility of the PTI-PML-Q merger might be a possibility. On the question of whether the provincial chief executive would contest in the upcoming general elections on the symbol of a bat (the election symbol of PTI) or on the symbol of a tractor (PML-Q’s poll symbol), Elahi said: “You will have to be a little patient to hear the answer to this question”.
The merger of all the three factions of MQM was a surprising move as these three factions were against each other and were following totally different paths. But, sudden merger of these factions has totally changed the politics of Sindh as well as the center. United MQM has boycotted the local body elections in Hyderabad and Karachi. The party’s statement came after it had demanded fresh delimitation before holding the local body elections, and despite the Sindh government’s announcement to delay the polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) insisted that they go ahead on January 15 without further interruption. The division between MQM and PDM parties has generated a new discussion. PTI is of the view that the party is going to ask the sitting Prime Minister for taking the vote of confidence. Imran Khan has also hinted that PM Shehbaz Sharif will have to take the vote of confidence. Speaking to a private news channel, the former premier said that Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif will be “tested” through different plans which includes vote of confidence from the National Assembly. Imran Khan said that the incumbent prime minister had tested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) so now the party would turn the tables on Shehbaz Sharif. The PTI Chairman further said that the party would hash out the details of the move in a party meeting on Sunday and carry out full planning for not only the trust vote but also other plans.
The merger of all the factions of MQM is benefitting PTI currently. If MQM leaves the alliance of PDM at center then PDM may lose the government. Similarly the merger of PML-Q in PTI will also strengthen PTI in center generally and in Punjab particularly. If the idea materializes then PTI will be strengthened further.

Kashmir has been the epicenter of conflict between India & Pakistan since the line of partition was drawn in 1947. Historically there have been four wars between two neighbouring nations. The most recent of these wars saw over thirty thousand soldiers and civilians being killed. Besides these wars, both nuclear nations have been continuously at low-level conflict, with skirmishes breaking out regularly.
In recent years ground operations have seen attacks on civilians and soldiers by both countries’ forces. Explosive weapons, including grenades, mortars and other forms of shelling have caused causalities on both sides. Additionally, the drifted land mines are adversely affecting the civilians along the line of control. Moreover, there have been over one thousand death and injuries from explosive weapons on both sides of Kashmir (Indian & Pakistani administered areas) according to Action on Armed Violence (AOVA). Furthermore, the majority of civilian causalities (88%) have been caused by the use of explosive weapons in populated areas, such as villages, schools, hospitals, and residential areas. Beyond the immediate harm, the explosive violence has also been responsible for significant damage to civilian infrastructure and the destruction and fear caused has had palpable impacts on civilian life, particularly for children.
Shelling along the line of control has also caused major disruptions in educational institutions. This has led to the closure of schools and deprived the population of access to necessary goods & services such as clean water, firewood, farmland and health care education and livelihood, and critical infrastructures. On the other hand, it impedes relief work, deprives people of humanitarian aid, and aggravates humanitarian problems.
Similarly, land mines are a serious menace along the line of control that has not been demined yet. People from different villages have fallen victim to mines usually treading on them while collecting firewood, gathering guchee (wild mushroom), and cutting grass for the cattle. Children have also been struck by toy bombs. Officially, 42 landmine victims have been reported from the two villages of Neelum (Rawta and Bugna) which reflects the exposure to the problem. Besides, risky behaviour and culture of a local community is also a threat to their lives, for instance grass cutting, collecting mushrooms, and fetching water from bank and nullas, collecting sand without having prior knowledge about land mines and explosives is a direct threat to their lives. Hence, a regular follow up for raising awareness is a requirement by keeping in view the prevailing threats of explosives and unpredictable security constraints in the region.
The lack of awareness and knowledge about the dangers of landmines and other explosive ordinances combined with the lack of information about the various types of improvised devices used and their locations further compound the problem.
The Pakistan Red Crescent Society AJK had started Community Based Risk Awareness & Safe Behaviour Program In October 2010 in the most affected districts of AJK along the Line of Control (LoC) specifically Muzaffarabad, Neelum & Poonch. Later on, its scope was extended to districts Bhimber, Kotli and Haveli districts. The main objective of this program is to aware the communities residing along LoC on landmines, UXOs, IEDs, and ERs to reduce the incidents and minimize the loss of precious lives. From 2011 to date more than 250,000 people were sensitized about Risk Awareness & Safer Behaviour sessions in the 06 districts of AJ&K, whereas the incident reporting and referral process to MPRC through referral process have also been carried out within the given timeframe. Victims of landmines are treated free of cost at the Muzaffarabad Physical Rehabilitation Centre (MPRC) and Chall Foundation Bagh. However, there is not much information about the Centres in remote villages infested with landmines which the PRCS CBRA-SB teams are referring survivors for physical rehabilitation from 2011 to onward. The Pakistan Red Crescent Society teams of the RASB Program are also organizing sessions at schools and villages to raise awareness and avert landmine incidents in six districts of AJK along the Line of Control (LoC).
As a consequence, the number of incidents have been reduced and the majority of the population is now aware of the Risk through Information, Education & Communication Material (IEC) sign boards, events, orientations sessions, seminars, awareness walks, editorials, awareness sessions in villages and schools, FM radio channels, SCOM messages and collaboration of stakeholders in RA-SB Program through MOUs/LOUs.
Consequentially, the continuous and coherent efforts of Pakistan Red Crescent Society in partnership with International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with regard to raise awareness on explosives along LOC, vulnerable communities are being able to report to concerned authorities about the presence of any drifted explosives in their respective areas.
Pakistan Red Crescent Society AJK State Branch through its Risk Awareness Safer Behaviour program with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has recently signed tripartite MOUs with the Civil Defence AJK and Education department to expedite the level of delivery through capacity building of Bomb Disposal (BD) staff of Civil Defence and teachers in schools along LOC. However, the survivors and other persons with disabilities seek attention to have some extraordinary activities in the region in this context.

Pakistan faced a crippling economic crisis as the country’s foreign reserves have depleted to around $4bn which can just cover a month of import. Inflation has been skyrocketing while the country is also dealing with the aftermath of last year’s catastrophic floods that resulted in an estimated loss of more than $30bn.
The situation in the country needs immediate financial assistance from foreign countries. Pakistan has big hopes with friendly countries including China, Pakistan and UAE. Few days ago Pakistani finance minister Ishaq Dar in a news conference expressed hope that Saudi Arabia will park its deposits in the central bank to provide some relief to the economy. Pakistan Immediately needs Saudi money to shore foreign reserves and ensure a safety valve from default. Riyadh deposited $3bn in November 2021, under the tenure of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Last month, the kingdom extended the terms of the fund.
One of the reasons among many others behind the current financial crises is the flood which hit Pakistan and destroyed infrastructure badly.
In a Conference under the leadership of Pakistan in the city of Geneva, Switzerland to help and recover the damage caused by climate disasters, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that the estimated cost of rehabilitation of flood affected areas is more than 30 billion dollars and Pakistan needs 16.3 billion dollars for immediate reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while addressing the ceremony said that the flood caused a large-scale destruction in Pakistan, the flood in Pakistan has changed the lives of the victims, today we are standing at an important turning point in history, in September last year, the UN Along with the Secretary General visited the flood affected areas, the people of Pakistan will always remember the support of the UN Secretary General, they are also grateful for the support of the international community, Pakistan will not forget the countries that helped in difficult times.
He said that the flood caused serious damage to agriculture, which led to food shortages. The restoration of the country’s economy with reconstruction is a big challenge for us. The damage caused by the flood is estimated to be more than 30 billion dollars.
He said that 33 million people were affected by the recent floods in Pakistan, the economy was badly affected by the destruction of infrastructure, houses, educational institutions, agriculture sector were damaged by floods.
Shahbaz Sharif said that there is still flood water in many areas of Sindh and Balochistan, the flood victims have to be rehabilitated and given a better future, a framework has been prepared for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the flood victims, work on the framework $16.3 billion is needed to do this.
President of the Islamic Development Bank made a major announcement for Pakistan during this conference on reconstruction and rehabilitation of flood-affected areas in Pakistan in Geneva. President of Islamic Development Bank said that 4 billion 20 million dollars will be provided to Pakistan in 3 years. Apart from this, the World Bank has also announced the completion of development projects worth 2 billion dollars in the affected areas. Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron also announced one million dollars in aid for Pakistan.
Since taking office last April, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif travelled to several Gulf countries to seek economic aid and investment. According to official data between April to November last year, Saudi Arabia has given more than $900m in aid and $500m for importing oil. Qatar promised to invest $3bn during Sharif’s trip to Doha in August.
With the relationship between the two nations going back more than 50 years, this is not the first time a Pakistani leader, either civilian or military, has picked the Saudi kingdom as their first destination after taking charge.
It is quite interesting to note that both the current Prime Minister Sharif and his predecessor Imran Khan travelled to Saudi Arabia on their maiden visits in 2018 and 2022 respectively. It shows the level of friendship of both countries and importance of Saudi Arabia for Pakistan.
To assist Pakistani Civilian Government in current financial situation, The Army Chief of Pakistan is also active and using his influence with full and sincere efforts.
Army Chief General Asim Munir met the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammad Bin Salman. According to Saudi media, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir in the winter camp. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman congratulated General Asim Munir on becoming Army Chief and agreed to strengthen bilateral relations. In the meeting, it was also agreed to promote military and defense cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. It should be remembered that Army Chief General Asim Munir has gone to Saudi Arabia on his first official visit. Pakistan’s new army chief held talks with top Saudi officials, including the defense minister, on his first official trip to the Gulf kingdom as the South Asian country faces an unprecedented economic crisis.
General Syed Asim Munir, who took charge in November visited Saudi Arabia which is a close defense and economic ally of Pakistan. He visited the Kingdom on his maiden overseas trip. He also visited the United Arab Emirates during the nearly one-week trip.
General Munir discussed military cooperation with Saudi defense minister Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz in the capital Riyadh on Thursday, according to the Saudi Press Agency. “We emphasized the strategic partnership between our brotherly countries, reviewed the bilateral military and defense relations, and discussed ways of strengthening our cooperation,” Prince Khalid bin Salman tweeted.
The last two former army chiefs, General Qamar Javed Bajwa – General Asim Munir’s predecessor, and General Raheel Sharif, went to Saudi Arabia for their first trip. General Asim Munir himself has served time in Saudi Arabia as part of the Pakistani army’s close defense cooperation with the kingdom.
Readers, it’s very good to see that Civil Government and Military Institution are on one page in these critical times. Pakistanis are quite optimistic that the day is not so far when these efforts will give fruitful results and will bring the country out of this worst crises which is affecting each and every citizen of Pakistan in shape of inflation. It’s a good sign for Pakistan and its deteriorating economy that all stake holders are on forefront to encounter the current crises.

A few days ago, a
case raised many questions in my mind. The issue was land possession. A few minority women encroached on a Muslim woman’s plot during construction. That is, they included part of the Muslim woman’s land in the construction of their house. A fight ensued. The matter reached the police station and the court. Here the minority women were at fault. They were neither obeying the court orders nor cooperating with the police. It was clear that a powerful person/institution was patronizing them.
You see, the minority groups bear the brunt of the abuse that is them, and usually, there is a lot of noise for their rights in Pakistan and at the international level. They dramatize this self-inflicted abuse and get the sympathies of society on it. And they also blackmail by taking advantage of this whole situation. Whether such people belong to the minority or majority group, they slander their entire community. Then the opinion and feelings of the world change about the community they are a part of. These black sheep defame their community by their wrongdoing and stain it. Such a community then loses the overall sympathy of society. There is a need to rein in such people so that the community’s interests can be protected and they can avoid being defamed.
On the other hand, you all know how our thana culture is! Based on bribery and recommendation, the case can be given any shape. People who have ever come in contact with the police station and the police will understand what I am saying. By the way, the police system has been updated. If you have any problem, call 15 and mention your situation along with the area limits and the name of the concerned police station. Then after an hour or two, a call will come from the concerned police station saying, “Yes, tell me what the problem is.” Although after calling 15, there is a response order of 5 to 10 minutes. After hearing the problem on the call from the police station, there is silence. The person gets tired and reaches the police station.
On reaching the police station, if the person has a written application, it is registered, and a receipt is handed over to him that the person against whom you have applied will contact you and call you. During this time, weeks pass. When the rapist learns that there is an application against him at the police station, he acts evasively by bribing the police and using political influence. The police handle the application by threatening the applicant. The police give the impression to both sides that they are with both. The person who has been raped knocks on the court door after getting frustrated with the police or after a police case is filed. Requests a court hearing by paying the lawyer’s fees. Due to the backlog of cases in the courts, the matter moves at an ant’s speed. No matter how hard the person tries, weeks and months pass before orders are received. A problem could have been solved in minutes/hours after calling 15 drags on for months/years. In the case of the property, the construction has been completed. If the fight is a quarrel, the quarrel has taken a more severe form. And if it is a case of murder, the evidence has been erased to a large extent. Just yesterday, a gentleman’s mobile phone was snatched at the square. He ran to two young police officers in the police van standing before him and said that the motorcycle riders had just seized his mobile phone. You are behind them. Go, they haven’t gone far. But these policemen told him to call 15.
In other words, forget immediate justice and justice. According to a recent survey by Transparency International, the police rank first, and the judiciary ranks third as the most corrupt department in Pakistan. Here only the powerful class is getting justice, and only this class is heard. The opening of the courts overnight has opened the eyes of the people that the elite and powerful class is being given the justice of their choice by going out of their way. If the police are left, the party that has the most prominent and influential, the police, becomes its servant. In the FIR, provisions are imposed on the opposite party by the police, which takes years and years. It is only possible to provide justice to the remaining poor people. If he has access to an influential person, he will be heard. Otherwise, he does not have to push anywhere for justice and his fundamental right.
Dispensing justice on time is not only the judiciary’s responsibility but also of the police because their negligence forces many citizens to turn to the courts, due to which the burden of cases on the courts increases. In comparison, the challans are not presented in time by the police and prosecution department in the courts. Similarly, the frivolous behavior of the witnesses and the parties also hinders the timely delivery of justice. If all the stakeholders perform their responsibilities properly, the justice system can be fixed very quickly because delays in the timely delivery of justice are also involved in injustice.

Much awaited and much discussed case of confidence vote in Punjab Assembly has reached to the logical end after a chaotic session of Punjab Assembly late night on Thursday. Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi received the vote of confidence from the members of the assembly. He successfully managed to get the 186 votes which were required as per the rules. Speaker Sibtain Khan, who presided the session, said that Elahi had received 186 votes — exactly the number required to retain his position and one less than 187 that PTI leaders had claimed to have prior to voting. Ahead of the voting, government and opposition lawmakers had renewed hostilities around the speaker’s dais and engaged each other in angry jostling. Shortly after, the opposition MPAs staged a boycott of the session and walked out. Outside the Punjab Assembly, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah labelled the session’s proceedings “against the rules and Constitution”, and accused the speaker of “bulldozing” the vote of confidence. Sanaullah and another PML-N leader Ata Tarar said that the vote of confidence will be challenged in the court.
The number game in Punjab assembly was being discussed at all the forums. The government was of the view that it has the required number but, the opposition parties kept on criticizing the government for delaying the vote of confidence. Opposition parties were of the view that Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi had lost the confidence of 186 members so he should get the vote of confidence to continue his office. Leaders of the opposition parties were eager for the confidence voting. But, when the CM Punjab Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi decided to take the vote of confidence the same leaders opposed the decision. Instead of sitting in the assembly comfortably to witness what they were demanding for a long time, the leaders of the opposition parties tried to disrupt the session through hooting and other such tactics. They even tried to attack the speaker during the session. At the end they decided to walk out from the hall. They came out and straightforwardly rejected the vote of confidence.
Hearing on the case was already continued in the Lahore High Court when the session took place. The hearing was scheduled for the next day. So, when CM Punjab successfully got the vote of confidence then the PML-N rejected the vote, but the very next day PML-N’s own Governor Punjab accepted the vote of confidence. When the development witnessed the hearing on the case was underway in the LHC. Resultantly, Lahore High Court (LHC) disposed of the petition challenging the governor’s order.
The discussion regarding confidence vote has come to its end by originating a new discussion. As the matter of confidence vote was unfolded due to the decision of Imran Khan for dissolving both the Punjab and KP assemblies so after the end of this mantra the discussion regarding dissolution of assemblies is getting the pace. Apparently it seems like Imran Khan will dissolve the assemblies soon, but when it comes to Punjab assembly there is again issues for PTI and its allied party PML-Q is not in the favor of dissolving the assembly promptly.

Pakistan is currently going through its worst days as the economy of the country is in great trouble due to continuously depleting foreign currency reserves. In such circumstances when the foreign currency reserves have come down to 4.5 billion Dollars, the stakeholders of the state are utilizing all the possible options to raise the depleting reserves for ensuring the survival of the state. Civil-military leadership is on the same page in this regard. Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir is on the visit of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates and the Prime Minister and his team including Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is in Geneva to interact the whole world for the sake of getting assistance to meet the challenges posed by the worst flood of history last year.
During the Geneva conference, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif actively raised the issue of the country and asked the world powers for assisting Pakistan in this time of need. Resultantly, the world powers and international institutions have assured the country that they will fully cooperate with Pakistan in this regard. Islamabad says the Geneva conference is focused on two objectives: the “Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Framework (4RF)” strategy to secure international support, and to find a way to build long-term climate resilience and adaptation against climate change in Pakistan. Khalil Hashmi, Pakistan’s permanent representative at the UN office in Geneva, said: “The objective is to secure international support for the 4RF, which includes institutional, financial and implementation arrangements for post-flood recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction. The conference will help us forge long-term partnerships to strengthen Pakistan’s climate resilience and adaptation.”
On the first day of Geneva conference, Pakistan on Monday raised more than $9 billion seeking support for its recovery from last year’s devastating floods a billion more than requested. The pledges came as the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan kicked off in Geneva. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif co-hosted the conference along with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The purpose of the day-long moot attended by heads of state and government and other stakeholders was to marshal international support to rehabilitate the population affected by super floods and reconstruct damaged infrastructure in a climate-resilient manner. During the conference, PM Shehbaz sought $8bn from Pakistan’s international partners over the next three years to rebuild the country as Guterres called for massive support to aid the rebuilding effort. The largest commitment on Monday – $4.2bn – came from the Islamic Development Bank Group. World Bank vice-president for South Asia, Martin Raiser, announced a $2bn contribution. Other contributors included the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Saudi Arabia, the EU, Japan and China.
Asking world powers and international institutions for help under the shadow of the United Nations (UN) is an effort of the government to deal with the current crisis. But, one thing should be clear that the aid which has been pledged by the countries and institutions in the conference will not be given to country promptly. This money will be given in phases with the strict check and balance on its spending. So, the aid pledged in the Geneva conference is not the solution of the current crisis. The default danger is still there. Country needs prompt dollars to protect its economy from default.

Pakistan’s economy is going through the worst time of its history. Foreign currency reserves have touch the historical down trend as they are currently standing at 4.5 billion dollars which are not enough for arranging imports for even one month more. The country is standing at the verge of devastation. But, at this point the move for asking international community to assist Pakistan has been played by the government. The rulers have decided to give support to the economy of the country by getting assistance from the world powers on the name of flood aid.
Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif and Secretary General United Nations (UN) Antonio Gutters jointly chaired an international conference in Geneva. Officials from some 40 countries as well as private donors and international financial institutions have gathered in Geneva as Islamabad seeks support in what is expected to be a major test case for who pays for climate disasters. The main purpose of the conference was to get the assistance from the big powers to restore the damages caused by climate in Pakistan. Pakistan Monday secured pledges well over a targetted $8 billion in flood aid as it scrambles to mobilise funds to rehabilitate the devastated 33 million population and repair damages worth billions. Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, in a tweet, announced that Pakistan has already received total pledges of $8.57 billion at the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva. The pledges came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched an $8 billion flood aid appeal at the Geneva moot, aimed at helping the country overcome the devastation caused due to the cataclysmic floods.
World Bank and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) pledged over $6 billion to Pakistan to aid its climate rebuilding effort in response to the country’s $8 billion flood appeal. The IsDB has pledged $4.2 billion over the next three years to Pakistan and World Bank $2 billion, while the United States, China and other nations have also announced support. Pakistan is in dire want of $8 billion from world donors during the next three years to shore up the country’s economy which was mostly laid to waste by extreme floods from June to October 2022, PM Shehbaz told the moot’s participants.
Pakistan is currently utilizing all the available resources to get a prompt assistance to avoid the possible default. Besides donors conference in Geneva, country is also in contact with IMF for finalizing the 09th review to get the package of 1.1 billion dollars. French President Emmanuel Macron said Paris was ready to support Pakistan in its talks with financial institutions, as the country faces huge losses from recent floods. An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation will also meet Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on the sidelines of a conference in Geneva, a spokesperson of the lender said on Sunday, as Pakistan struggles to restart its bailout programme.
There is no eye blinking from the fact that the economy of the country standing very close to its default, therefore the government is utilizing all the possible tactics for protecting country and nation. But, the sad reality is that worldwide image of the country has been affected badly by begging for survival at international level.
