Ali Asad, a Pakistani wrestler who won bronze for his nation in the 57kg division at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, had his medal taken away after a positive drug test.
In the wrestling competition at the CWG in Birmingham in August, Ali outclassed Suraj Singh of New Zealand in just 55 seconds. This added another medal to Pakistan’s collection, which already included two silvers and two bronze.
The wrestler’s use of illegal performance-enhancing substances was discovered, though.
Prior to departing for the CWG from Pakistan, the athlete had a test done to check for the presence of prohibited performance-enhancing drugs; the results were positive, it was revealed Thursday.
Although he was one of nine medal winners who recently collected their cash incentives at a ceremony held at PM House, the Pakistan Sports Board has withheld his money (PSB).
This was true of the drug test conducted at the CWG. Ali did ask for a B sample test, but that result was similarly positive.
“I have never purposefully taken any performance-enhancing drugs. How I have been deemed positive surprises me. When asked about his initial test results, Ali Asad said, “I would prefer going for the B samples tests.
Ali will now have a chance to explain himself by testifying before an inquiry committee, but he runs the risk of receiving a four-year ban for the infraction.
