Siraj and Mushtaq have been asked to explain their position on the matter today

PESHAWAR:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued notices to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chief Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan for violating the Code of Conduct by holding a public meeting in Upper Dir.

The notice issued by the district monitoring officer (MDO) of Upper Dir directed the candidates to appear in-person or through their counsels on March 28 at 11:30am to explain their position on the matter.

The notice also warned that legal proceedings would be initiated against them and their candidates under Section 234 (3) of the Elections Act, 2017.

According to the commission’s code, political processions and car rallies are not allowed in local government elections. However, candidates can hold corner meetings for which they have to inform the local administration in advance so that proper security arrangements can be made.

Moreover, the use of loudspeaker and sound system is allowed in corner meetings.

It is for the district administration to ensure that candidates are given equal opportunities in this regard without discrimination.

It is worth mentioning here that the commission has already served notices to Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for violating its Code of Conduct.
