The General Headquarters (GHQ) excused providing personnel from army
The General Headquarters (GHQ) on Thursday excused from providing personnel from army, paramilitary Rangers and Constabulary (FC) for the upcoming provincial and general elections, stating that the forces are occupied in national security due to recent wave of terrorism.
ECP had asked the defense ministry to send soldiers and rangers to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) for the upcoming elections.
Ministry received a response from GHQ stating that personnel could not be deployed for the upcoming elections in Punjab and KP.
Due to the flood situation in Punjab’s Rajanpur, Rangers personnel were already present, allowing them to perform election security duties.
The letter stated that the country’s security forces were currently working to maintain law and order, including at the borders.
The fear of terrorist attacks during electioneering is emphasized in the letter.
Additionally, it mentions that army personnel will be performing duties during the census, rendering them unavailable for other tasks.
In a letter to ECP earlier on Wednesday, President Dr. Arif Alvi also requested that elections be held immediately in Punjab and KP.
