KARACHI: A comprehensive security strategy has been developed by the police in advance of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches in Karachi to ensure the players’ and officials’ safety.

Nine matches will be played at the National Bank Cricket Arena during the city’s cricket extravaganza, which will last until February 26.

The chief of the police department’s security division, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dr. Maqsood Ahmed, told the media on Monday that the foolproof security plan had been finalized in advance of the PSL matches, during which 7,500 police personnel would be deployed in the city.

At the critical points, approximately 2,600 members of the Security Division, including 1,000 male and female Special Security Unit (SSU) commandos, 1,800 members of the traffic police, 600 members of the Special Branch, and additional members of the district police, will be performing their responsibilities alongside members of other law enforcement agencies.

For PSL security in Karachi, 1,000 police commandos and sharpshooters have been deployed to the National Stadium, Karachi airport, routes, hotels, and other locations. Sharpshooters have also been deployed to sensitive locations.

As a quick response force to any situation, a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of highly trained and well-equipped commandos will be on standby at the SSU Headquarters and patrol the stadium’s surroundings.

In addition, a specialized SSU command and control bus will be stationed at the stadium to keep an eye on public order.

DIG Ahmed stated that CNG-equipped vehicles and all drones are strictly prohibited inside the stadium, and roads will remain open for commuters during the match, with the exception of one track on Sir Shah Suleman Road.

The tracksuit-clad SSU commandos will direct and assist spectators from the parking areas to the enclosures.

In addition, fans have been advised to arrive at the stadium early to avoid lengthy lines. The stadium’s gates will open three hours before the game begins.

The stadium would not be permitted to contain any firearms, toy guns, explosives, firecrackers, cigarettes, matchboxes, lighters, or materials with sharp edges like knives and metal-wooden clubs.

It is strictly prohibited to display discrimination or offensive remarks based on race, religion, or ethnicity on any banner, poster, or placard. It is against the rules for spectators to throw anything at other spectators or onto the ground.
