KARACHI: Dismally low voter turnout in recently held NA bye polls in Karachi has showed frustration of voters with prevailing election system and stressed the need for adopting proportional representation system in the country, said Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor here. He said very low turnout of voters in NA-245 bye polls has said loud and clear that the voters have rejected Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf and other political parties that took part in the polls. He said the so-called winning candidate should show a moral courage and step down as overwhelming majority of voters even didn’t bother to visit the polling stations. He said this tells that the voters now have no confidence on so-called mainstream political parties that in fact are clubs of elite class people. Now it is high time to give a chance to alternate political leadership through proportionate electoral system.
He said 91percent of the voters in this contituency did not vote anad thus showed no confidence to all candidates and their political parties. He said the winner candidate of the PTI should himself tender resignation as winner from a total nine percent votes is in fact a loser.
Altaf Shakoor said that poor masses are now fed up with the elite politics. He said the present set of politicians has failed to give democracy and good governance to the country. He said this system is for election of electables and it has nothing to do with the representation of poor masses. He said fair and free elections in Pakistan is a distant dream and it would remain a dream till the proportionate representation system is introduced in Pakistan which was also the dream of Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
He said the poor masses of the country have been suffering a lot due to heavy rains and floods but the elite class political parties are least concerned. He demanded immediate rehabilitation of the millions of rain and flood affected people. He said rains have damaged already vulnerable infrastructure in megacity Karachi and the federal and provincial governments should allocate sufficient funds for the reconstruction of the battered infrastructure in the megacity on emerging basis.
