Marseille stun PSG at home first time since 2011

Ruslan Malinovskyi scored an excellent second-half winner as Marseille beat rivals Paris Saint-Germain at home for the first time since 2011 on Wednesday, winning 2-1 to reach the French Cup quarter-finals.

From the spot, Alexis Sanchez gave Marseille the lead shortly after the half-hour mark, but Sergio Ramos equalized just before halftime.

Malinovskyi, a player from Ukraine, put the hosts back in front, and they held on to win at the Stade Velodrome to end their long wait for a victory over PSG.

We are aware that our supporters have waited a long time for that victory. After only their second victory in their last 27 matches against PSG, Marseille captain Valentin Rongier told France 3: “We are happy to share this with them.”

After losing in the last-16 of last season to Nice, the record 14-time champions PSG were eliminated early for the second time in a row.

Marquinhos, the captain of PSG, stated, “We made a few mistakes that cost us dearly.”

“Because it is a Cup match against our great rivals, it is a defeat that hurts. We wanted to win and be qualified to return to Paris.

“We must improve, continue working, and move forward.”

For the first time since 1989, Marseille, coached by Igor Tudor, will now be among the favorites to win the trophy for the eleventh time.

After losing to Nice 3-1 at home on Sunday, Marseille fell eight points behind leaders PSG.

However, after goalkeeper Pau Lopez saved Matteo Guendouzi’s excellent shot from Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Nuno Mendes an early goal, they got back into the game.

As Marseille advanced, Ramos was to blame when he erratically fouled Cengiz Under just inside the area.

Sanchez scored his 11th goal of a productive first season since joining OM from Inter Milan after stepping up to upset Donnarumma.

Neymar and Lionel Messi both came close to leveling the score with free kicks, and Ramos made it 2-2 with a header from a Neymar set-piece in first-half extra time.

Malinovskyi, an on-loan Atalanta midfielder, pounded a left-footed shot into the top corner of the goal in the 57th minute to give Marseille their lead back.

PSG rarely posed a threat, but when Neymar put Messi in position to score, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner missed the target and almost forced a penalty shootout.

As Marseille held on, Ramos had an injury-time shot disallowed because it was clearly offside and headed a good chance straight at Lopez.

Following a 1-1 draw, holders Nantes prevailed over Ligue 1’s bottom club Angers on penalties after Florent Mollet scored an equalizer in the 87th minute.

After blowing a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 earlier, Lyon also won a shootout against Lille to advance.

While second-tier teams Rodez, Annecy, and Grenoble all secured spots in the last eight, Toulouse prevailed 3-1 over in-form Reims.
