Prospects of  elections

This is a political and electoral reality that the events of 9th May have changed the national politics , as the 9th May was proven another 9/11 for PTI,, and senior politician Jahangir Tareen has announced the formation of a new political party called “Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party” as an alternative to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

More than 20 former members of the National and Provincial Assemblies, former federal ministers, and prominent political figures have joined the newly formed political party, laying the foundation for the formation of the third major political party in the country.

Khawaja Asif stated that Jahangir Tareen supported PDM during the motion of no-confidence, which led to Imran Khan’s removal from the Prime Minister’s office.

Recently , the Corps Commanders’ Conference has strongly condemned the incidents of May 9, stating that a plan has been devised to spread hatred and create chaos against the state and institutions, and it is time to firmly enforce the law against these conspirators and masterminds.

It is premature to speculate about the outcome of the next general elections. Apparently, it seems more likely that Imran Khan’s would fail to get majority in the National and Provincial Assemblies.

It is also very much possible that if Imran may be disqualified or granted some kind of punishment,  then his party might be disintegrated into more factions and as a result,  Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party  could obtain the berth of third major political party of the country.

Jahangir Tareen will face a challenging phase at the time of distribution of the party tickets. He and his think tank will hesitate in giving tickets to the  former PTI’s elected members of the National and Provincial Assemblies who have joined the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, which will be his toughest test. Tareen will have to bring in youth as a fresh blood for his party.

Some senior leaders, sitting currently on treasury benches have given indications that a possibility is there that the parties included in the current ruling alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement(PDM) may contest elections in separate capacities. In this way their vote-bank would also be divided.

Now it may be predicted that the ruling PML(N) might not get majority seats as it is the general view of the public that the flood of inflation is due to the policies of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and both the policymaker belong to PML(N).

As far as PPP is concerned , in fact it lost its real power base in  the province of Punjab and only on the basis of Sindh’s vote , it would be much harder for it to form the federal government alone.
