Syeda Muhadsa Naqvi
Education is the cornerstone of progress and development in any society. Academic integrity, therefore, is of utmost importance in ensuring that students receive a fair and unbiased learning experience. However, regrettably, academic malpractices have been on the rise in various educational institutions around the world, including Pakistan. This disturbing trend not only undermines the educational system but also jeopardizes the future of the nation’s youth. In Pakistan, academic malpractice is becoming increasingly popular, with teachers reportedly holding personal grudges and discriminating against students based on their sects. This article delves into the issue, unearths its impact, and proposes possible solutions to combat this pervasive problem.
Academic malpractices encompass a wide range of unethical behaviors, such as cheating, plagiarism, favoritism, and discrimination. These practices undermine the principles of fairness, meritocracy, and equal opportunities within educational institutions. In Pakistan, academic malpractices have, unfortunately, found fertile ground in the academic environment. One of the most alarming aspects of academic malpractice in Pakistan is the reported existence of personal grudges held by teachers against certain students. Teachers, as influencers and mentors, play a pivotal role in shaping students’ minds and future. When personal biases seep into the academic setting, it compromises the integrity of the entire education system. Students may face unfair treatment, biased grading, tempering in results and even unjust disciplinary actions. Furthermore, the discrimination based on religious sects is an equally distressing concern. Pakistan is a country with a diverse population, comprising various religious sects and denominations. When teachers discriminate against students based on their religious beliefs, it not only hinders academic growth but also perpetuates societal divisions and prejudices.
Impact on Students and Society:
The ramifications of academic malpractices extend beyond the individual student. When deserving students are overlooked due to personal bias or sectarian discrimination, their potential goes untapped, and society as a whole suffers. It perpetuates a cycle of inequality, preventing talented and capable individuals from contributing to the nation’s progress. Moreover, such malpractices can have profound psychological effects on the affected students. They may experience feelings of disillusionment, demotivation, and self-doubt, which can hinder their overall academic performance and future aspirations.
Witnessing academic malpractices and experiencing personal biases based on religious sects can be emotionally devastating for sensitive students. The education system should be a nurturing space that encourages intellectual growth and emotional well-being. However, when students observe favoritism and discrimination, they may feel alienated and marginalized. This emotional toll can lead to feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and depression. Even the most patriotic students, driven by a desire to contribute to their nation’s progress, can become disheartened, lose hope when faced with a flawed and biased system and start thinking about leaving the country.
In extreme cases, some students, overwhelmed by the emotional distress caused by academic malpractices, may encounter suicidal thoughts. The constant fear of being treated unfairly or overlooked due to personal grudges can drive vulnerable students to the brink of desperation. Tragically, some students may succumb to these overwhelming feelings and resort to committing suicide. Such heartbreaking losses not only devastate families but also underscore the urgent need to address this issue effectively.
Combatting Academic Malpractices:
To address the growing problem of academic malpractices in Pakistan, a multi-pronged approach is needed:
Creating Awareness:
Educational institutions, along with government agencies and civil society, must join forces to raise awareness about the negative consequences of academic malpractices. By fostering a culture of integrity and ethics, students and teachers can collectively combat this menace.
Implementing Strict Policies:
Educational institutions should develop and enforce comprehensive policies against academic malpractices. These policies should include disciplinary measures for both students and teachers found engaging in unethical behaviors.
Encouraging Whistleblowing:
Creating a safe and anonymous platform for reporting academic malpractices will encourage students and faculty to come forward and expose such activities without fear of reprisals.
Teacher Training:
Emphasize teacher training programs that promote inclusive and unbiased teaching practices. Encourage educators to reflect on their biases and foster an environment of acceptance and tolerance.
Rewarding Merit:
Recognize and reward academic excellence based on merit, irrespective of religious background or personal affiliations. Encouraging fair evaluation systems will deter teachers from engaging in biased behaviors.
As someone who has personally endured the damaging effects of academic malpractices, I can attest to the urgency and criticality of this issue. The scars left behind by biased treatment have fueled my determination to bring about change. My journey from victim to advocate has given me the strength to speak up and be the voice for those who may still be struggling including me. Personal biases or opinions should never be allowed to cast a shadow on the potential and aspirations of our youth. Let us stand united in safeguarding the dreams of our students, ensuring that their future is shaped by fairness, integrity, and equal opportunities for all.
