Water and Power Department Signs Tripartite Agreement for 58 MW Solar Project in Bunji, Boosting Regional Power Supply
Gilgit – The Water and Power Department (WPD), Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, today formalized a tripartite agreement with the Bunji community for the allotment of 150 acres of land. The signing ceremony, held at the Chief Secretary’s Office in Gilgit, marks a significant step toward installing a 58 MW solar power project to address energy needs across the region.
This grid-connected project will supply clean electricity to Astore, Gilgit, Ghizer, Nagar, and Hunza districts, substantially reducing loadshedding. Funded by the Federal Government at a cost of Rs. 24 billion, it is part of a comprehensive initiative to establish solar projects in 10 districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. The first phase—an 18 MW rooftop solar project—is already in the tendering process, with tenders for the remaining 82 MW scheduled within the next three months.
In recognition of the Bunji community’s cooperation, the agreement includes key concessions: uninterrupted electricity supply and the construction of water channels to irrigate barren lands in Bunji Dass, promoting local socio-economic development.
Additional Chief Secretary (Development), Gilgit-Baltistan, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed, addressed the gathering: “We deeply appreciate the Bunji community’s support and assure them of our full commitment to fulfilling their demands. This collaboration will drive sustainable energy progress in Gilgit-Baltistan.”
