Islamabad: Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Chaudhry Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, held an important meeting with a delegation of senior media representatives at Jammu Kashmir House, Islamabad, where issues faced by newspapers and the journalist community were discussed in detail.
The delegation included Secretary Finance of the All Kashmir Newspapers Society and Chief Editor of Daily Jannat Nazir, Ijaz Khan, as well as senior journalist and Information Secretary of the Kashmir Journalists Forum, Ali Hasnain Naqvi. Coordinator Syed Aftab Gilani, Public Relations Officer Aamir Aziz Khokhar, and PRO Irfan Rathore were also present during the meeting.
During the discussion, the delegation comprehensively briefed the Prime Minister on the financial challenges confronting state-run and private newspapers, including rising operational costs, limited advertising revenue, and delayed payments. They also highlighted the professional and welfare-related issues faced by journalists, stressing the need for institutional support, improved working conditions, and timely facilitation to ensure the sustainability of the media sector.
The delegation urged the government to take practical steps to stabilize the newspaper industry and provide relief to journalists who are playing a crucial role in informing the public despite limited resources. They emphasized that a strong and independent press is essential for democratic development and transparency in governance.
Responding to the concerns, Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore reiterated that his government recognizes the vital role of media in society and is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the sector. He stated that immediately after assuming office, the government prioritized providing facilities and support to state newspapers, and this policy will continue with renewed focus.
He remarked that journalists serve as the eyes and ears of society, and their professional well-being is directly linked to the health of democracy. Ensuring their protection, welfare, and freedom is, therefore, a key responsibility of the government. He assured the delegation that concrete measures would be taken to resolve financial and administrative issues of newspapers and to safeguard the rights of journalists.
The Prime Minister further emphasized that the promotion of responsible and independent journalism remains a cornerstone of democratic governance. He added that the government would continue to engage with media stakeholders through consultation and dialogue to develop sustainable solutions for the challenges faced by the industry.
The delegation appreciated the Prime Minister’s positive approach and media-friendly policies, expressing confidence that the government’s continued support would help strengthen the media sector in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and improve the working conditions of journalists.
