Islamabad () The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to consult the Attorney General of Pakistan and other legal experts on the decision of President Alvi to fix the date of elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 9th April.
An important meeting of ECP was held here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sultan Sikandar Raja in which the current situation arose after the date fixing for the elections in Punjab and KP provinces by the President of Pakistan, Arif Hussain Alvi.
The meeting held detailed discussion on the repercussions and legal aspects of the announcement made by the President regarding holding elections.
The members of the election commission adopted different points of view but the CEC said that the Election Commission always prepared for holding the elections in the country and this time it is also ready to do so within 90 days in both the provinces.
However, the election commission would seek the opinion of the Attorney General of Pakistan and other legal experts on implementation of the President’s decision about the elections.
The Election Commission has invited the Attorney General of Pakistan to its office for consultation on the matter . The names of two senior lawyers are also under consideration not only for constitutional guidance but also for going to the court or otherwise , if it is deemed necessary .
