The current Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly completes its five-year tenure today, with Speaker Nazir Ahmad Advocate presiding over its final session. In its concluding sitting, the House deliberated on 13 key pieces of legislation.
The Assembly was constituted after the general elections held on 15 November 2020, with polling in one constituency (GBA-3 Gilgit-III) conducted on 22 November following the death of a candidate. Members took the oath of office on 26 November 2020, formally commencing the legislative term. Soon after, Khalid Khurshid Khan was elected Leader of the House and took the oath as Chief Minister on 1 December 2020.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly consists of 33 seats in total—24 general seats, 6 reserved for women, and 3 for technocrats—with 17 seats required for a simple majority. Following the 2020 election, a PTI-led government was formed, supported by coalition partners and independent members.
The political landscape, however, shifted significantly during the tenure. In mid-2023, a forward bloc emerged within PTI, triggering a no-confidence move against Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid. As a result of this realignment, Haji Gulbar Khan was elected Chief Minister on 13 July 2023 and took the oath the same day, leading the government through the remainder of the term.
With today’s final sitting, the Assembly completes its constitutional duration as Gilgit-Baltistan now transitions toward the next electoral cycle.
