On Saturday, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam urged his team to capitalise on its recent string of four victories by winning the Twenty20 World Cup final.
The 2009 champions lost to India and Zimbabwe on the final ball to begin their tournament, but they recovered to get to Sunday’s final against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
In his pre-game press conference, Babar stated, “We have lost the first two matches, (but) the way we have come back in the subsequent four matches, we have played extremely well.
“Although there is pressure, it can only be managed by having faith in ourselves and feeling excited rather than afraid. And it is crucial to follow through in order to get good results.”
Although Jos Buttler’s England are the slight favourites against Pakistan, Babar is counting on Pakistan’s quick bowlers to give them the upper hand, especially during the six-over powerplay.
He claimed that England’s 10-wicket victory over India to advance to the finals served as evidence of their
To win the finals, “our goal is to stay the course and capitalise on our pace attack.” The match will depend on how effectively the powerplay is used to take wickets.
Pakistan is expected to select the same lineup, with Shaheen Shah Afridi leading a threatening attack and Babar and Mohammad Rizwan leading the batting, notwithstanding any late injuries.
Ramiz Raja, the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board, met with the players on Friday and gave them a pep talk while recalling how the Pakistan side he played on defeated England.
Our confidence was greatly increased when the chairman visited and discussed his World Cup experience, according to Babar. He suggested that we maintain our composure and concentrate on the positive.
In the opening round of the competition, Pakistan’s match against India drew a crowd of more than 90,000 spectators to the MCG, and they have received strong support everywhere they have played in Australia.
People inspire us, and it’s encouraging to see that they come and support the Pakistani team at any stadium where we play, he added.
