Kabul Attack

Pakistan has been facing the curse of terrorism throughout the last two decades. Thousands of people and hundreds of armed personnel embraced martyrdom during the war on terror. It was a long journey behind the eradication of the roots of terrorism from the country. But, the sad reality is that terrorism has hit the country again. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has announced to start attacks in the country again. Since then two attacks have been witnessed. One of them took place in Quetta where a vehicle of police was attacked and 04 persons were martyred. Another incident took place in Kabul where an attacker attacked Pakistani embassy in Kabul. Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul came under attack on Friday with Chargé d’Affaires (CdA) to Afghanistan Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani targeted, according to a press release from the Foreign Office (FO). The FO said the embassy compound came under attack and while Nizamani remained safe, a security guard, Sepoy Israr Mohammad, was “critically injured” in the attack while protecting the mission head.
Attack on Kabul embassy took place after a day Pakistani delegation met with the high ups in Kabul to discuss the matters related to recent threat posed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Hina Rabbani Khhar was leading this delegation where the issue related to TTP was raised. But, just a day after this visit Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul was attacked. Attack on any embassy of any country in the world is considered as a big crime and the issue gets international attention. US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price Saturday called for a “full and transparent” investigation into the assassination attack on Pakistan’s Head of Mission to Kabul Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani. Moreover, the UN Security Council also condemned the attack in the “strongest terms” and called for ensuring the safety of diplomatic and consular premises. The 15-member council wished a speedy and full recovery to the security guard who was critically injured in the “reprehensible” attack. It also underscored the need for bringing the perpetrators of the attack to justice. “The members of the Security Council called on all relevant parties to respect and ensure the safety and security of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel of United Nations Member States,” it said. “The members of the Security Council stressed the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises, and the obligations on receiving States under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, to take all appropriate steps to protect diplomatic and consular premises against any intrusion or damage and to prevent any disturbance of the peace of these missions or impairment of their dignity and any attack on diplomatic premises, agents and consular officers,” read the statement.
No one can deny the fact that TTP is promoting terrorism in Pakistan while sitting in Afghanistan. So, the Kabul Embassy attack and Quetta attack are eye openers for the government. The threat of TTP should be taken wisely. The government would have sent someone having close relation with Taliban to Kabul for discussing the matter instead of sending Hina Rabbani Khhar. All the important steps should be taken to deal with TTP through talks. Otherwise, the curse of terrorism can disrupt the peace of the country once again.
