Floods are humanitarian disasters of epic proportions, leaving thousands without food and shelters. Natural disasters like floods are menifestations of climate change. When sea surface temperature increases, more moisture uptake by the weather system, which in return is dropped over land in unprecedented volume. Unfortunately our system is not geared to cope with even half of the volume.
Floods in 2010 affected an estimated 14-20 million people and casualties were reported over 1700. 46 districts were grievously affected. Once again havoc monsoon rain wrecked on wide swathe of Pakistan. Country is facing unprecedented damage and devastation due to castatrophic affects of calamitous floods.
Sindh, balochistan along with lower punjab, kpk and GB is badly hit by flood recently. More than 3 million people are affected from june till now, of which 184000 have been displaced. Damage has been reported to more than 495200 houses, 702100 live stock has been lost and more than 3000 km of roads and 130 bridges have been distroyed.
Hue and cry of affected people, creeping over fatalities of their beloved ones shivered my soul. Many of the family members are still looking for their lost family members. Their homes and livestocks have been destroyed completely. Being human, such awful conditions are tough to watch but the whole country is suffering from malice of flood. Unfortunately, affected areas are inundated and no end of misery can be seen as water levels are not subsiding.
It’s an appealing situation for the nation to act like a single unit. Succintly; Everyone of us has to contribute for the affected areas and families up to our maximum. Media has to play its own part in coping cataclysmic situation. In current political turmoil, all the leaders of the country have to pretermit self-interest politics. Instead, its the need of an hour to be on the same table and find the best ways to get rid of doom of this misery. looking back to the petrified past, we have not learnt any lesson. No steps have been taken to clampdown such natural catastrophics. All policy makers have to look beyond immediate means,so that state can build infrastructure that can take such calamitous floods. Unless we plan firm strategies for the future, we will be wrecked to repeat this cycle of distruction year by year.
