The administration of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has asked the Inspector General of Police, Capital Territory Islamabad to lodge an FIR against the staff members of the hospital who were found involved in selling waste of PIMS.
The sources said that the Executive Director PIMS had forwarded a letter to the capital’s police chief on recommendations of an internal inquiry committee .
The communique reads that on 27th February the administration of the hospital found a pick up vehicle bearing registration number RIS 15 carrying the medical and surgical infectious waste( including items which were to be incinerated ) such as used syringes and drips from hospital to some unknown location at G-11 sector of the federal capital for recycling.
The letter informed the IG Police that recycling of infectious waste may cause the spreading of various lethal diseases like HIV/AIDS ,’B’ & ‘C’ Hepatitis and Cancer. The Executive Director of PIMS asked the police chief that an investigation and legal action may be started against a sanitary worker and on duty drivers of the hospital.
Earlier when the whole matter came into the notice of ED PIMS, he without wasting time, constituted a three members fact finding committee to probe the matter under Professor of General Surgery Dr.S.H. Waqar. The other two members of the committee were Dr. Aniza Jalil Deputy Executive Director and Dr. Aziz Bangash Deputy Director (Critical Care Area). The internal investigating body was given the task to put up its report to the Executive Director within two days.
Meanwhile as the report of the committee came to surface the administration of the hospital also took preemptive measures and ordered transfer of security staff so as this kind of incident could not happen again.
According to orders issued by the administration ,Security Inspector of the hospital Shahid Khattak was sent to the Medical Technicians Training Institute from PIMS.
Whereas Security Inspectors Rao Sadaqat Ali and Rana Abdul Jabbar have been posted to the main hospital .
Rao Sadaqat Ali would also supervise the security matters of housekeeping at PIMS. He will also be responsible for the proper functioning of the incinerator, segregation of infectious and noninfectious waste and coordination with CDA for disposal of the waste of the hospital in a proper way .
