LAHORE: Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has signed and handed over the summary to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to dissolve the Punjab Assembly.
Khan invited the PDM-led government to the table on Friday to discuss the possibility of early general elections while also threatening to dissolve assemblies where they have power.
The PTI’s argument is based on the premise that if the assemblies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab are dissolved, more than 60% of Pakistan will be forced to hold by-elections.
The party believed that by taking this action, it could force the government to call an early election; however, the ruling alliance has categorically denied this perception and stated that elections will be held on time in 2023.
“Give us a date for elections or we will dissolve the KP and Punjab assemblies,” Khan said from his Lahore home in Zaman Park in a video address to the PTI’s Punjab parliamentary party.
“We have the full support of the PML-Q, and CM Punjab Chaudhry Pervez Elahi will dissolve the provincial assembly at my request.”
He stated that the PTI’s demand for early general elections was part of the party’s commitment to reviving the country’s economy, as the party was entirely focused on getting Pakistan back on its feet.
The government has rejected the PTI’s offer, claiming that negotiations cannot take place with strings attached. The former PM is holding consultations within the party, but no decision on dissolving the PTI-ruled assemblies has been made.
