SC rejects petition to place Shehbaz’s name on ECL

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court dismissed on Tuesday the appeal of the National Accountability Bureau to place on Exit Control List (ECL) the name of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif.

During the hearing, the NAB prosecutor told the court that Sharif is currently detained in Kot Lakhpat jail. At this, Justice Muneeb Akhtar wondered what purpose would it serve if the accused is already in custody.

Responding to the question, the prosecutor said many people flee abroad and it becomes difficult for the agency to investigate them, disclosing that six people are absconding in a reference against former Punjab chief minister.

The bureau filed the appeal last year after the Lahore High Court had directed the authorities to remove his name from the no-fly list.

Sharif was arrested by the bureau in September after the LHC rejected his bail plea in a money laundering case.
