ISLAMABAD: On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that the accused who assaulted former president and military leader General (retd) Pervez Musharraf should be freed.
The case involving the refusal of the accused Rana Tanveer to be released despite serving his entire sentence was considered by a three-member panel presided over by Justice Sardar Tariq Masood.
Hashmat Habib, the petitioner’s attorney, stated during the court that although his client has served out his term, he has not yet been released.
“The term of life imprisonment is 14 years, and my client has been in prison for approximately 20 years,” claimed Habib.
The highest court rejected the federal and Punjab governments’ arguments against Tanveer’s release and instructed the jail staff to free him after hearing arguments from both parties.
After being detained on December 31, 2003, in connection with the Rawalpindi pump assault case, Tanveer was given a life sentence by the Supreme Court in 2005.
