LONDON: According to British police, two women have been charged with criminal damage after soup was thrown over a painting of sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh at the National Gallery in London by climate change demonstrators.
One of five versions of the artwork that are on exhibit in museums and galleries throughout the world was destroyed on Friday, according to a video shared by the Just Stop Oil campaign group, which has been organising demonstrations in the British capital for the past two weeks.
The painting remained uninjured, according to the gallery, although the incident did cause some damage to the frame. Later, it was put back up for viewing.
The two ladies, 21 and 20, were charged with “criminal damage to the frame of van Gogh’s Sunflowers artwork” and were expected to appear later at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, according to the police.
Assaulting the sign outside the New Scotland Yard police headquarters in downtown London, another activist will also testify in court.
During the protests on Friday, 28 persons, according to the police, were detained.
