Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was excused from appearing before the court for the hearing of the Toshakhana matter on Monday by an Islamabad district and sessions court.
The former prime minister received a letter from the court instructing him to ensure his attendance at the upcoming hearing.
Khan’s attorney, Advocate Ali Bukhari, gave medical excuses for not appearing in court.
In response to a plea submitted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) calling for criminal charges to be brought against Khan in the Toshakhana matter, the court sent notice to Khan on December 15.
On November 22, the trial court heard the Toshakhana case brought by the Election Commission against Khan for allegedly engaging in corrupt activities. Khan has constantly refuted the allegations as fabrications.
The PTI leader received a notice from the trial court in Islamabad in accordance with the order of the electoral authority.
Today’s Hearing
The court requested a power of attorney on Khan’s behalf during the hearing from his counsel.
Have you included a medical report with the application for the exemption? A judge questioned the PTI chief’s attorney. Khan had not made any applications, the court ruled.
Bukhari responded by saying he will send a WhatsApp request for a medical report.
The Toshakhana reference hearing date was requested by Khan’s attorney from the court for February.
Khan “cannot get bail until he presents himself before the court,” the ECP attorney reportedly added.
Further, he requested that the judge issue an arrest order for the former premier in the event that he fails to show up for court.
The court asked the ECP to give certified copies of the case and said it would investigate this issue.
The case hearing was postponed to January 31 by the court.
