The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced that the next general elections will be held in the country in the last week of January 2024. It is the decision for which the nation is waiting anxiously since the dissolution of the assemblies last August.

Many political parties including Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf and Pakistan People’s Party have also demanded the ECP that the elections should be held within 90 days after the dissolve of the assemblies, as prescribed in the constitution.

Similarly, the USA, UK and World Bank have also hinted that timely and fair elections could resolve the problems that are being faced by Pakistan nowadays.

The Election Commission of Pakistan issued the official statement in this regard in which it is stated that the preparation of final lists of new constituencies after delimitation according to the new census, would be finished till November and without completing it the holding of elections is not possible.

As per the constitution of the country, the elections should be held before 6th November, this year but it was the PDM led government that took the decision very late, almost one week ago before the dissolving the assemblies to hold elections on the new census. As a matter of fact, the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif at that time, was not sure about the schedule for coming back of PML(N)’s supremo Nawaz Sharif to the country and his party wanted some time regarding his return so they deliberately, with the mala fide intentions, took the decision of holding elections according to new census very late so the elections may be delayed from the constitutional limit and they may gain some political advantage of deferred elections.

Next month the Election Commission would hold a series of meetings with the political parties to settle the code of conduct for the next elections. Now after the announcement of holding elections , the political hustle and bustle would be kicked off in the country as the political parties have enough time to finalize their candidates for each and every constituency. A draft code of conduct has already been shared  by the ECP with all the political parties for their feedback

The Election Commission has also written a communique to the all four provincial chief secretaries and chief commissioner Islamabad for getting preparations of elections as the constitution bound all the executive authorities of the federations to assist ECP in holding the elections.

As the timeframe of the elections has come to surface , now the role of caretaker government begins here to provide full cooperation to the Election Commission in holding free, fair and transparent elections in the country to transfer the powers to the new elected government following polls .

The country also witnessed some rift between the two constitutional institutions i.e the Presidency (Aiwan-i-Sadar) and Election Commission of Pakistan on the dates of holding general elections but now as the ECP has announced the time period for next polls and it is hoped that this row might be over.
