Refugee leaders meet Latif Akbar, discuss longstanding grievances

Muzaffarabad: In a significant development aimed at addressing the protracted issues of Kashmiri migrants from 1989, Chaudhry Latif Akbar, Speaker of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, convened a pivotal meeting with the representatives of the migrants’ working committee.
The meeting, held in Muzaffarabad on April 24th, saw a thorough discussion on the multifaceted challenges confronting the migrant families, who have endured precarious living conditions for over two decades. The committee, led by Uzair Ahmad Ghazali, emphasized the urgent need for legislative intervention, allocation of assembly sessions, and concerted efforts towards alleviating their hardships.
During the deliberations, committee members underscored the pressing need to rectify past mistakes in rehabilitation efforts, highlighting the repeated errors in resettlement initiatives. They voiced concerns over current attempts to relocate migrants to remote mountainous areas without adequate planning, exacerbating their plight.
Furthermore, the committee firmly asserted their refusal to accept flawed schemes that endanger their future well-being, urging the speaker to ensure their proper representation in the assembly and allocate resources for rehabilitation projects.
In response, Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar assured the committee of his unwavering commitment to address their grievances. He pledged to prioritize the Kashmiri movement for self-determination and vowed to diligently pursue solutions to the challenges faced by the migrants.
The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of hope, as legislative authorities vowed to take proactive steps towards resolving the longstanding issues of the Kashmiri migrants. With promises of concerted action from the assembly, there is optimism for a more equitable and just resolution to the plight of the migrant families.
